OpenFoam

• Description: OpenFOAM is the free, open source CFD software developed primarily by OpenCFD Ltd since 2004. It has a large user base across most areas of engineering and science, from both commercial and academic organisations. OpenFOAM has an extensive range of features to solve anything from complex fluid flows involving chemical reactions, turbulence and heat transfer, to acoustics, solid mechanics and electromagnetics.

SU2

• Description: The SU2 suite is an open-source collection of C++ based software tools for performing Partial Differential Equation (PDE) analysis and solving PDE-constrained optimization problems. The toolset is designed with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and aerodynamic shape optimization in mind, but is extensible to treat arbitrary sets of governing equations such as potential flow, elasticity, electrodynamics, chemically-reacting flows, and many others. SU2 is under active development by individuals all around the world on GitHub and is released under an open-source license.

Lethe

• Description: Lethe (pronounced /ˈliːθiː/) is an open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD), discrete element method (DEM) and coupled CFD-DEM software which uses high-order continuous Galerkin formulations to simulate single and multiphase flows.

TOSCA

• Description: Toolbox fOr Stratified Convective Atmospheres (TOSCA) is an open-source, massively-parallel, finite-volume large-eddy simulation tool for conducting numerical simulations of wind farms immersed in the thermally-stratified turbulent atmospheric boundary layer.

Krypton

• Description: Krypton is an open-source framework to solve the linear and non-linear Parabolized Stability Equations (PSE) on a curvilinear coordinate system as a predictive tool to estimate the laminar-to-turbulent transition at transonic conditions. Written in Python and leveraging well-established libraries, the framework includes a laminar flow solver using a consistent numerical scheme as the modal stability calculations. The code is validated against published cases and can serve as the basis for future development of modal stability based problems in aerospace engineering, geophysical, and multiphase flows.

• Description: COOLFluiD (Computational Object-Oriented Libraries for Fluid Dynamics) is a component- based framework for scientific high-performance computing, CFD and multi-physics applications, originally developed at the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics and at the KU Leuven Center for mathematical Plasma Astrophysics (CmPA).

MFIX

• Description: The National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL’s) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, MFiX —Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchanges— is central to the laboratory’s multiphase flow reactor modelling efforts. This open-source software has over three decades of development history and more than 7,000 registered users worldwide. MFiX has become the standard for comparing, implementing, and evaluating multiphase flow constitutive models and has been applied to an extremely diverse range of multiphase flows applications. The successes achieved in modelling complex multiphase flow systems have led to new and improved key attributes such as drag, polydispersity, attrition, and agglomeration models, among other significant advances.

Basilisk

• Description: Basilisk is a Free Software program for the solution of partial differential equations on adaptive Cartesian meshes. It is the successor of Gerris and is developed by the same authors.

OpenSBLI

• Description: OpenSBLI is a Python-based modelling framework that is capable of expanding a set of differential equations written in Einstein notation, and automatically generating C code that performs the finite difference approximation to obtain a solution. This C code is then targetted with the OPS library towards specific hardware backends, such as MPI/OpenMP for execution on CPUs, and CUDA/OpenCL for execution on GPUs.

CFL3D

• Description: CFL3D is a structured-grid, cell-centered, upwind-biased, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code. It can be run in parallel on multiple grid zones with point-matched, patched, overset, or embedded connectivities. Both multigrid and mesh sequencing are available in time-accurate or steady-state modes.

HTR solver

• Description: Hypersonic Task-based Research (HTR) solver for the Navier-Stokes equations at hypersonic Mach numbers including finite-rate chemistry for dissociating air and multicomponent transport.

UCNS3D

• Description: UCNS3D is an open-source computational solver for compressible flows on unstructured meshes. State-of-the-art high-order methods are are available in a versatile 2D and 3D unstructured CFD framework for a wide-range of compressible flow problems.

AMRVAC

• Description: MPI-AMRVAC is a parallel adaptive mesh refinement framework aimed at solving (primarily hyperbolic) partial differential equations by a number of different numerical schemes. The emphasis is on (near) conservation laws and on shock-dominated problems in particular. A number of physics modules are included; the hydrodynamics and the magnetohydrodynamics module are most frequently used. Users can add their own physics module or modify existing ones. The framework supports 1D to 3D simulations, in a number of different geometries (Cartesian, cylindrical, spherical).

HIFILES

• Description: High-order numerical methods for flow simulations capture complex phenomena like vortices and separation regions using fewer degrees of freedom than their low-order counterparts. The High Fidelity (HiFi) provided by the schemes, combined with turbulence models for small scales and wall interactions, gives rise to a powerful Large Eddy Simulation (LES) software package. HiFiLES is an open-source, high-order, compressible flow solver for unstructured grids built from the ground up to take full advantage of parallel computing architectures. It is specially well-suited for Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) architectures. HiFiLES is written in C++. The code uses the MPI protocol to run on multiple processors, and CUDA to harness GPU performance.

Pencil code

• Description: The Pencil Code is a high-order finite-difference code for compressible hydrodynamic flows with magnetic fields. It is highly modular and can easily be adapted to different types of problems. The code runs efficiently under MPI on massively parallel shared- or distributed-memory computers.

Incompact3d

• Description: Xcompact3d is a Fortran-based framework of high-order finite-difference flow solvers dedicated to the study of turbulent flows. Dedicated to Direct and Large Eddy Simulations (DNS/LES) for which the largest turbulent scales are simulated, it can combine the versatility of industrial codes with the accuracy of spectral codes. Its user-friendliness, simplicity, versatility, accuracy, scalability, portability and efficiency makes it an attractive tool for the Computational Fluid Dynamics community.

• Description: PyFR is an open-source Python based framework for solving advection-diffusion type problems on streaming architectures using the Flux Reconstruction approach of Huynh. The framework is designed to solve a range of governing systems on mixed unstructured grids containing various element types. It is also designed to target a range of hardware platforms via use of an in-built domain specific language derived from the Mako templating engine.

Palabos

• Description: The Palabos library is a framework for general-purpose computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with a kernel based on the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. It is used both as a research and an engineering tool: its programming interface is straightforward and makes it possible to set up fluid flow simulations with relative ease, or, if you are knowledgeable of the lattice Boltzmann method, to extend the library with your own models. Palabos stands for Parallel Lattice Boltzmann Solver.
